The best tablet of 2020 didn’t come from Apple

So I love the iPad Air 2020, which I believe is the best tablet of Apple’s whole lineup. But it mostly works out of being an iterative remix of iPad Pro features with a smaller price tag. My favorite tablet of the year, though, comes from a company you’ve probably never heard of, and doesn’t run any of your favorite apps.

Despite those quirks, the reMarkable 2 is my pick for the best tablet of 2020. Don’t worry if this is the first you’ve heard of the reMarkable brand, the reMarkable 1 was a neat device, but didn’t prove as cool or successful for a few reasons, which I’ll get to below. The reMarkable 2 fully earns its name, and became an essential part of my life during this year of adjusted workflows.

The reMarkable 2’s completely unique look is part of its appeal, and that starts with its shockingly thin 0.2-inch thick frame. That’s 50% less thick than the 0.3-inch reMarkable 1, and a lot of that change is found in how it’s got a whole new body. Gone are the blocky and chunky white plastic frame and bezels, replaced by a slick machined aluminum sliver that houses a 10.3-inch digital paper screen, in what feels like a miracle of engineering.

Comparatively, the new iPad Air is really just the iPad Pro, but with new color options. They’re neat, but not exactly a revelation.
