Apple TV+ has renewed spy thriller Tehran, the streamer’s first non-English-speaking series, for a second season.
The Israeli show’s renewal comes just four months after its premiere on the streaming service, having received strong reviews.
Apple TV co-produced the the first season with Israeli broadcaster Kan 11, but from the second season onwards, it will be an Apple Original.
Directed by Daniel Syrkin, Tehran tells the story of Mossad agent and computer Tamar Rabinyan (Niv Sultan), who goes deep undercover for a dangerous mission in her hometown of Tehran.
The series, which was created by Moshe Zonder, Dana Eden and Maor Kohn, also stars Shaun Toub, Navid Negahban, Shervin Alenabi, Liraz Charhi and Menashe Noy.
Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, Sultan and Toub previously responded to the comparisons that have been made between Tehran and Homeland.
Explaining the differences between the two shows, former Homeland star Toub said: “The beauty of this series is that this has not been done before. The struggle between Israel and Iran has not been really shown and it’s a very balanced show and I think that’s why people will enjoy it and really enjoy the journey.
“It’s a fast-paced espionage thriller but at the same time you see the humanity of these characters.”
Sultan added that she thinks Tehran is the first show to portray “a different point of view of Iran and of Tehran” and that it shows off “the amazing culture and food and music” of that part of the world.
“These are things that haven’t really been explored on-screen before and I think that so many people can relate and connect to this,” she said.
Tehran season 1 is available to stream on Apple TV+ now.
