WhatsApp is adding a new feature to make your web and desktop experience more secure whereby you’ll need to use the fingerprint sensor or face unlock feature on your smartphone to access the messaging app on other devices. It means that your nosy roommates or colleagues will no longer be able to sign in to your WhatsApp account without your consent.
It’s quite a step forward in the security stakes from being able to quickly scan a QR code on a browser to needing biometric authorisation to use WhatsApp on the web or desktop.
For those worried about WhatsApp’s tendency to share data with Facebook, the messaging app says that your face or fingerprint data remains on the device you are using and isn’t uploaded to its servers.
The added security of biometric authorization only applies if you have it set up on your smartphone, so if you don’t have lock screen security set up in the first place then you’ll still be able to log in to WhatsApp web or desktop app just by scanning the QR code. You should see the new security options roll out over the next few weeks.
