Sony’s Xperia PRO 5G is a $2,500 vanity project that no one needs

Xperia PRO 5G

Sony first touted the Xperia PRO 5G back in 2020 but it never made it to market until now, which may explain the presence of the Snapdragon 865 processor instead of the new SD888 that was announced just two months ago. Aimed at the professional user who will appreciate the integration with DSLR cameras, and HDMI Input support, the Sony Xperia PRO 5G comes with an eye-watering $2,499 price tag.

For $2,499, you’ll get a phone that is powered by 2020’s Snapdragon 865 processor with 12GB of RAM, 512GB of storage, and a MicroSD card slot in tow. The 6.5-inch OLED display sports a 3840 x 1644 resolution with a 21:9 aspect ratio and 643ppi. Keeping the lights on is a pretty average sized 4,000mAh battery that is coupled with a USB-C charging port with Power Delivery.

The camera department is the Xperia PRO 5G’s claim to fame, but not for its own abilities because its trio of 12MP sensors and 8MP selfie camera aren’t going to set new levels of camera prowess. It’s the PRO 5G’s ability to integrate with DSLR cameras by acting as a viewfinder and as a USB link to the Alpha 7S III camera that is the main reason for its existence, along with the ‘fine-tuned’ connectivity with Verizon’s 5G network, with both sub-6GHz and mmWave standards supported.

Finally, the phone launches running Android 10 out of the box, which is frankly quite disappointing seeing as we are some months since Android 11 reached its final release.

All-in-all, the Xperia PRO 5G smacks of being an exec’s vanity project that somehow made it to market despite there being no real need for it to go further than a sketch of specs on a notepad. You can pick up the Xperia PRO 5G from Amazon for $2,500 via the link below.
