After the sub-par performance experienced by Galaxy S20 users outside of the US whose phones ran on the much-maligned Exynos 990, the Exynos 2100 chipset is official and confirmed to power the new Galaxy S21 series in selected regions (basically outside of the US). The complaints about the discrepancy in performance between the Exynos 990 and the Snapdragon 865 were loud enough for Samsung to pull the plug on its custom core development. Manufactured on the 5nm process, the Exynos 2100 is the first chipset since 2015 to not feature custom cores, running on ARMâ€™s Cortex cores instead.
Samsung says that the Exynos 2100 boasts a 30% multi-core performance boost over the Exynos 990, with 20% better power efficiency. The new chipset boasts a single high-performance Exynos X1 core, 3 x Cortex-A78 cores, and quadruple Cortex-A55 low-power cores.
The new Mali-G78 MP14 Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) promises up to 40% increased performance over its predecessor. The Exynos 2100 also features Amigo technology that optimizes power consumption by the chipset.
The new chip supports up to six camera sensors and up to 200MP, 8K/30fps recording, 8K/60fps playback, and an incredible 4K/120fps recording.

The Exynos 2100 supports both sub-6GHz (up to 5.1Gbps) and mmWave (up to 7.35Gbps) 5G technologies, as you would expect in a flagship chip launching in 2021. Youâ€™ll also find a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) with a trio of cores producing up to 26 trillion-operations-per-second (TOPS) of power which is 11 more than the Exynos 990 while being twice as efficient.
On paper at least, the Exynos 2100 is shaping up to be a worthy contender to Qualcommâ€™s Snapdragon 888 processor that will power the Galaxy S21 in the US. Itâ€™s going to be interesting to see how it matches up with the SD888 for Galaxy S21 buyers in terms of battery and performance.
