MediaTek’s new Dimensity 1100 and 1200 chips will pave the way for affordable premium flagship smartphones

Having promised to announce a new flagship processor during its virtual summit at the tail-end of 2020, MediaTek has gone one better by launching the Dimensity 1100 and the top-of-the-line Dimensity 1200. The new chipsets bulk up the top-end of MediaTek’s 5G inventory with the Dimensity 1200 gaining 200MP camera support and enhanced AI capabilities.

The new Dimensity chips support every network from 2G to 5G thanks to MediaTek’s M80 integrated modem, which also sports 5G UltraSave technology to optimize battery life. The 5-core HDR-ISP adds support for 200MP images (108MP for the Dimensity 1100) as well as staggered 4K HDR video capture.

One of the weaknesses of MediaTek chips in the past has been in the camera department and the chip-maker has noted this and brought some series upgrades to the Dimensity 1200 and 1100 chipsets that are manufactured using the 6nm process. You can expect improved low-latency and power-efficiency, as well as AI features such as AI-Panorama Night Shot, AI Multi-Person Bokeh, Ai noise reduction, and HDR capabilities.

With eight cores consisting of a high-performance ultra-ARM Cortex-A78 clocked up to 3GHz, three further Cortex-A78 super cores, and a quartet of ARM Cortex-A55 cores to handle the low-level tasks, the Dimensity 1200 promises to scale new heights of performance for MediaTek. The 1100 chip also has an octa-core design, but without the ultra-core, making do with 4 x Cortex-A78 super-cores, and 4 x Cortex-A55 efficiency cores.

On the graphics side of things, there’s a 9-core ARM Mali-G77 GPU, with a 6-core MediaTek APU 3.0 that takes care of the AI functions.

The 1200 supports high-refresh displays up to 168Hz, while the 1100 chipset can handle up to 144Hz displays, both comfortably higher than what is present on most current smartphones. Both chips support Bluetooth 5.2 and Dual-Link True Wireless Audio that lets you stream to multiple wireless devices simultaneously. MediaTek’s HyperEngine 3.0 gaming technology is present on both the Dimensity 1100 and the 1200,

We should see the first smartphones powered by the Dimensity 1100 and 1200 chipsets towards the end of Q1 and early Q2, with brands such as Xiaomi, OPPO, Realme, Vivo, and
