Apple’s AR Glasses Might Only Enter Production In 2022

If you were hoping to see Apple’s AR glasses launch this year, you might be disappointed because according to a report from DigiTimes (paywall), it seems that Apple might only begin production of the wearable in the first quarter of 2022 at the earliest.

The report goes on to add that the glasses are only about to enter the second phase of the prototype design. While we have been hearing rumors about a pair of Apple AR glasses for a while, it seems that Apple has been approaching it rather cautiously. Apparently the glasses so far have not met Apple’s own standards and expectations for weight and battery life, which is why it is taking so long.

To be fair, we can understand why Apple is approaching this with caution. Google had previously attempted to launch their own pair of smart glasses, the Google Glass, but ultimately failed. It is unclear if it is because society wasn’t ready for such technology at that time, or if the device simply wasn’t good enough.

It would be a very expensive lesson for Apple should it fail, so like we said, it’s not surprising that they are taking their time. That being said, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo did say recently that Apple could launch an AR device this year. Whether or not that is the AR glasses or something else entirely is unclear, so it’s probably best to take this with a grain of salt for now.
