Apple iPhone 13 leaks have already revealed design, display, storage and ‘disruptive’ performance upgrades that could leave iPhone 12 owners with buyer’s remorse. But now we know Apple is working on something far more radical.Â
In a new video (embedded below), popular industry insider Jon Prosser has revealed Apple is currently testing a new foldable iPhone and he has an indication of its timeline for release.Â
“According to my sources, there is a prototype clamshell folding iPhone similar to the style of the Z Flip from Samsung, Prosser explains. “There are shells of this device being tested in a Shenzhen Foxconn factory. I say shells of this device because it’s not the entire unit, mostly they’re just trying to test the hinge durability [at this stage].
Prosser goes on to explain that this clamshell iPhone would have an “actual foldable displayâ€ with Samsung providing OLED panels for the device. Interestingly, Prosser states that Apple has previously tested a dual screen device and has yet to decide which form factor it will prioritize.Â
“What I have been told is that we are not going to get both, like Samsung has the Galaxy Z Fold and the Galaxy Z Flip, with this it is just going to be one or the other. At least at first.
As for the timeline, Prosser cites September 2022 but warns that the production schedule is not concrete at this point.Â
All of which piles pressure on Apple to knock the iPhone 13 out the park. Recent years have shown that iPhones leak far ahead of release (plans for the iPhone 12 Mini first appeared in June 2019) so, if Apple wants to keep iPhone fans upgrading then the iPhone 13 that precedes it will have to be something special.
Thankfully, all signs are that it will be.Â
